Wishful thinking
This is the only sane way of thinking. A moment of subject-oriented ontology.
Essentially, this is a mindset filled with desire. The term itself refers to a situation where someone convinces themselves, say, that they'll make money on bets, even though that's impossible.
So. The problem isn't that it's not true. It's that it's a vile desire. Without insider trading, it's impossible to outperform the market enough to cover commissions and other transaction costs. Well, the extreme is managing someone else's large capital by playing a long-term strategy, but that's managing an investment fund, not betting.
So, the problem is desire, not the fact that desire is driving thinking.
Now, regarding science. Opinions on any everyday issue change chaotically, and there's no point in it. Oh, fat is bad, you need to eat sugar, it doesn't make you fat. Or, take this crazy calorie thing right now. Or there's the attitude toward different materials, like Teflon being awesome, oh, cancer or not, who knows. Plastic, lead, asbestos, and so on. Complete bullshit, a chaotic mess. Smoking is very healthy, oh, I mean, harmful. Every half second there's a new opinion.
So you need to focus on your desires, aesthetics, and comfort.
